A big advantage of this progress is a&nbsp;<strong>growing awareness for demographics<\/strong>&nbsp;that the industry so far has seemed to not address, or simply&nbsp;<strong>leave out<\/strong>. As the general population of gamers is growing, the more stories we have to tell, and more<strong>&nbsp;work we have to do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, we have seen an increase of&nbsp;<strong>significant representation<\/strong>&nbsp;of people with diverse identities, however, it still feels as if the gaming industry has yet to&nbsp;<strong>accurately portray<\/strong>&nbsp;one of the most all-encompassing groups of people;<em>&nbsp;people living with disabilities.<\/em>&nbsp;With around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2020\/07\/esports-inclusivity-disabled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10% of the global population<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/how-ablegamers-the-xbox-adaptive-controller-and-apx-are-helping-millions-of-disabled-gamers-play-the-games-they-love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">46 million gamers with disabilities&nbsp;<\/a>in the US alone, there is a significant need for&nbsp;<strong>more inclusion<\/strong>&nbsp;in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article we explore the<strong>&nbsp;possibilities<\/strong>&nbsp;that esports open up to people with disabilities, the&nbsp;<strong>criticism<\/strong>&nbsp;that comes along with it, and the<strong>&nbsp;effect<\/strong>&nbsp;it has on the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A long way to go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is still a rather obvious lack of visual representation of characters with disabilities in video games, there are a lot of people working&nbsp;<em>relentlessly<\/em>&nbsp;to successfully include&nbsp;<strong>everybody in the gaming community<\/strong>. Strengthening&nbsp;<strong>communication, teamwork, and tolerance<\/strong>&nbsp;are only some benefits to mention. The more unfortunate it feels that people with disabilities are oftentimes almost&nbsp;<strong>completely exempt<\/strong>&nbsp;from communal physical activities. But now, that\u2019s where&nbsp;<strong>e-sports<\/strong>&nbsp;come into play. While it\u2019s hard to ultimately compare both activities, e-sports pose a&nbsp;<em>real<\/em>&nbsp;chance for people living with disabilities. Forming<strong>&nbsp;bonds with teammates<\/strong><strong>, working on strategies, and succeeding at competitions&nbsp;<\/strong>are all part of the educational esports experience, with many players even breaking into<strong>&nbsp;the pro-scene<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trials and Tournaments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the surge of trials and&nbsp;<strong>overwhelmingly positive feedback&nbsp;<\/strong>from the community, a variety of&nbsp;<strong>non-profit organizations, activists, and committees<\/strong>&nbsp;have focused their main attention on advocating for more events that are specifically targeted towards the inclusion of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the pandemic hit the world at the end of 2019, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/britishesports.org\/news\/british-esports-teams-up-with-pc-specialist-and-fierce-pc-to-offer-inclusive-esports-tournament-exclusively-for-alternative-provision-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British Esports Association held a Rocket League tournament for alternative provision classes<\/a>&nbsp;(Classes that provide education for children who cannot attend mainstream school systems), trying to provide a more<strong>&nbsp;inclusive experience<\/strong>&nbsp;in the so-often exclusive world of esports. With the pilot event having been a&nbsp;<strong>tremendous success,<\/strong>&nbsp;it is expected to pick up again once circumstances are more allowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Provision Class Rocket League Tournament<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/altagram-test.nool.studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ap-schools-the-green-room-announcement-1-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"How People with Disabilities are changing Esports\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Source:<a href=\"https:\/\/altagram-test.nool.studio\/people-with-disabilities-changing-esports\/#\">&nbsp;https:\/\/britishesports.org\/press-releases\/rocket-league-championship-ap-schools-second-year\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With many more events like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dexerto.com\/gaming\/japan-hold-first-ever-esports-tournament-disabled-gamers841577\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Gunma Esports Festival in Takasaki<\/a>, Japan\u2019s first Esports event for gamers with disabilities, Or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2018\/09\/netmarble-organises-esports-event-for-disabled-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netmarble\u2019s National e Festival Competitions for Students with Disabilities<\/a>, it comes to no surprise that even the official&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialolympics.org\/gaming-for-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Special Olympic Games this year had a subsection for esports.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fair Games<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While most advocacy from allies of the community seems to come from&nbsp;<strong>good intentions<\/strong>, it is also crucial not to forget to actually&nbsp;<strong>listen to the voices of the community<\/strong>, so we can provide people with the support that they feel&nbsp;<strong>comfortable with<\/strong>. The umbrella term of people living with disabilities is quite a broad one, and even two people managing the same struggles might have&nbsp;<strong>completely different life experiences<\/strong>&nbsp;and preferences of how they like to be treated. Some like to be helped, some&nbsp;<em>depend on themselves<\/em>. Some prefer playing in separate leagues, some&nbsp;<em>do not<\/em>. The important thing is to give people the<strong>&nbsp;choice to do so.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A tough line to balance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tucker Griggs<\/strong>, 23 and among the<strong>&nbsp;top 5% of general Overwatch players,<\/strong>&nbsp;plays solely with his feet. In an interview with gamesindustry.biz , he further elaborated on the struggle of his identity as a gamer. \u201cIt's a tough line to balance, giving&nbsp;<strong>enough support to disabled esports without hindering the disabled in esports.<\/strong>&nbsp;[\u2026] There should be regulations put in place for esports to support the disabled community in both the regular esports league and any new disabled esports leagues. But sometimes it\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>not something people are asking for<\/strong>.&nbsp;<em>People can conflate equality and being special<\/em>,\u201d said Spohn. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with people being different. We\u2019re asking that people&nbsp;<strong>stop minding that we\u2019re different<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the term of disability being of such a wide variety, trying to establish blanket rules, standards and regulations seems&nbsp;<strong>nearly impossible<\/strong>, and limiting at best when it comes to measuring people\u2019s success in competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to make a competition fair between someone who can<strong>&nbsp;barely push the buttons on a standard controller<\/strong>&nbsp;or someone who needs a specialty controller versus someone who is an&nbsp;<strong>absolute monster at Fortnite<\/strong>,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/esportsinsider.com\/2020\/07\/esports-inclusivity-disabled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;said Spohn<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>not a fair fight<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Establishing rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Capcom, in an attempt to more organically include the people living with disabilities,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/articles\/2021-06-24-levelling-the-playing-field-what-the-new-accessible-gaming-tournaments-could-mean-for-disabled-players\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has officially stated&nbsp;<\/a>that for their official Pro Street Fighter tournaments they \u201c<em>will not limit cosmetic or functional controller customizations providing fairness is maintained. Additionally, we recognize certain customizations may be required so that players with physical impairments can compete.<\/em>\u201d This is a great step not only towards the inclusion but&nbsp;<strong>normalization<\/strong>&nbsp;of gamers from all backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professional Street Fighter player&nbsp;<strong>Mike \u201dBrolylegs\u201d Begum<\/strong>, for example, competes against people by pushing buttons with&nbsp;<strong>only his head<\/strong>. Begum\u2019s style of playing does not require any additional special equipment, and Begum himself takes great pride in holding his own in competitions despite his physical handicap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;<strong>Begum and Griggs<\/strong>&nbsp;are not the only examples as to why we should promote having<strong>&nbsp;both systems&nbsp;<\/strong>for people to compete in esports. On the other end of the spectrum, young FIFA player&nbsp;<strong>Daniel<\/strong>&nbsp;(last name unknown) says in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/newsbeat-56577024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&nbsp;an interview with the BBC<\/a>&nbsp;that while he enjoys playing the main tournaments, he would prefer to have the opportunity to play against other players like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Being able to play real opponents is really hard because I play the game in a different way to them.
